The emotional and ethical dimensions of nursing care in contexts of health risk due to the coronavirus pandemic

This research aimed to identify the emotional dimension of healthcare provided by nursing students at FESI-UNAM in converted and regular hospitals during the pandemic, including the self-perception of those who claimed not to have provided care. The goal was to understand how emotions shape an ethic of care in health crisis contexts. The mixed, sequential, and multilevel methodology combined quantitative data from a 2023 survey of 198 students with qualitative data obtained through interviews and autobiographical workshops with a convenience sample. The main findings revealed the interdependence between caregiving and health and the triple caregiving workdays of the students, highlighting worry, responsibility, and fear as driving emotions and stress as the most prevalent emotion, increasing by 22.72%. The research proposes a typology of healthcare work and an inclusive definition that transcends the biomedical view. The results suggest that the emotional experience of these future healthcare professionals was crucial in shaping their ethics of care.
