Longitudinal Study on Sleep Disturbances as Unintended Consequences of the COVID19 Pandemic in Argentina
Keywords:
COVID-19 Pandemic, Lockdown, Unintended consequences, Sleep disturbances, ArgentinaAbstract
In the context of the unintended consequences triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the lockdown policies, this study focuses on the sleep disorders produced in this context. It aimed to evaluate the quantity and quality of sleep in the adult population during the quarantine and compare the strict quarantine period (May 2022) with the previous and subsequent periods (third quarter of 2019 and 2020). Additionally, differences in sleep were analyzed based on individual characteristics (gender, age) and household structural conditions (socio-occupational stratum). A descriptive analysis was conducted using panel data collected by the Argentine Social Debt Observatory through the Argentine Social Debt Survey (n=500) administered in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) in 2019 and 2020. The results show that the quantity and quality of sleep were affected during the strict quarantine period, with the most affected being young people, women, and members of lower socio-occupational strata. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive health approaches in designing health policies and emphasize the relevance of sleep quality as a public health research topic, offering useful indicators for understanding gender differences, age-specific experiences, and socioeconomic inequalities in crisis situations.
