Houses, Bodies, and Degraded Materialities among Middle-Class Families in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina

This paper analyses how economic uncertainty is inscribed onto the homes, bodies, and everyday environments of middle-class families in the Buenos Aires suburbs (conurbano bonaerense). Drawing on an ethnography conducted between 2015 and 2024 in the municipality of Morón, it examines the effects of declining living conditions and housing habitability following these families' loss of purchasing power and rising indebtedness. Damp walls, postponed repairs, exhaustion, multiple employment, and new environmental perceptions demonstrate how economic, domestic, and social deterioration intertwine in daily life. From an anthropological perspective, this piece explores how such deterioration, beyond serving as a descriptive category for the state of affairs, becomes an analytical key to understanding contemporary forms of vulnerability.
